The Indian Army, the largest branch of the Indian Armed Forces, is responsible for land-based military operations, national security, and defense against external threats. It also maintains peace within India's borders and conducts humanitarian rescue operations during natural calamities. Established in 1947, it inherited most of the regiments and infrastructure of the British Indian Army in post-partition India. The President of India serves as its Commander-in-Chief, with the Chief of Army Staff as the highest-ranking military officer.
