Marketing jobs in India: the skills employers actually test for, and how to show them

Every marketing resume says growth, brand and performance. Employers stopped reading those words. Here is what they test instead.

Marketing has a vocabulary problem. Growth, brand, performance, content, funnel, ROI: every resume contains all of them and none of them tells an employer what you can do. Hiring managers in India learned this some time ago, and the marketing interview has quietly changed from a conversation about your experience into a test of a few specific skills. This post is about which ones, how they are tested, and how to walk in with the evidence already in hand.

The roles behind the word marketing

Postings say "Marketing Manager" and mean very different jobs. Read for the real one.

  • Performance marketing. Paid search, paid social, marketplace ads, and the daily management of a budget against a target cost per acquisition. The most openings and the most measurable. You are judged on numbers that are printed every morning.
  • Growth. Experiments across acquisition, activation and retention, usually in a software or consumer app company. Part marketing, part product, part analytics. You are judged on whether the experiments you ran moved a metric that mattered.
  • Content and SEO. Writing, editing, and making pages that search engines and people both want. Steady demand, undervalued, and the role where the gap between a good and an average hire is largest.
  • Brand and communications. Positioning, campaigns, PR, the visual and verbal identity. Fewer roles, more senior, and the hardest to prove from the outside.
  • Product marketing. Launches, messaging, sales enablement, competitive positioning. The fastest-growing specialist track in India as software companies build go-to-market functions.
  • Marketing analytics. Attribution, dashboards, incrementality. Increasingly its own role, and the one that everyone else's performance depends on.

The marketing roles open on insiderOne are filed by title into this family, and each one links to the company page behind it, so you can see where a firm actually hires before you apply.

The five skills that get tested, not asked about

Here is the shift. An interviewer used to ask what you did. Now, for at least three of the five skills below, they give you something to do.

  • Writing. You will be asked to write something in the room or as a take-home: an ad, a landing page, an email, a product description. Not because the role is a writing role, but because every channel runs on words and a marketer who writes badly costs money in every channel at once.
  • Reading numbers. You will be shown a funnel, a campaign report or a spreadsheet and asked what is wrong with it, or what you would do next. The test is whether you can tell a real signal from noise and whether you know which number to protect.
  • Channel judgement. Given a budget and a goal, where does the money go and why. The interviewer wants to hear you reason about what a rupee does in search versus social versus a partnership versus a content programme, and to hear you say what you would not spend on.
  • Execution. Can you ship a campaign on the date, with the assets, the tracking and the approvals in place. This is usually tested through your stories, and the tell is whether you can describe the boring parts.
  • Working with product and sales. Marketing in India sits between a product team that ships and a sales team that closes. Interviewers probe whether you can hold your ground with both and still get the launch out.

How the marketing interview runs

A screening call, then a take-home or an in-room exercise, then a panel with the hiring manager and someone from product or sales, then a closing conversation. The exercise is the round that decides. Most candidates prepare for the panel and treat the exercise as a formality, which is backwards. The exercise is where the writing and the numbers are tested, and it is the round the hiring manager remembers.

insiderOne's Interview OS runs a marketing-specific loop with those four rounds, fresh prompts each time, graded on the reasoning. Use it to find which of the five skills you are weakest in before an interviewer does.

Why the portfolio is not enough any more

A portfolio is the right thing to have and it is weaker than it looks. It shows that a campaign existed and that your name is near it. It does not show what you specifically did, whether the campaign worked, or whether the numbers you quote are the numbers the company saw. Employers know that campaigns are team efforts, that results get rounded up in the retelling, and that the same piece of work appears in three people's portfolios. So they ask the questions the portfolio cannot answer: what was your exact contribution, what did it cost, what did it return, and who else would say so.

The candidates who stop having to argue about attribution are the ones who bring evidence that does not depend on the portfolio. A Skill Verification on insiderOne is a live challenge on the skill itself, writing, analytics, channel strategy, with fresh questions that cannot be prepared for, graded on reasoning and sealed with a receipt anyone can check at the verifier. It answers the question "can this person actually do this" separately from the question "what did they do before", and it is the first of those that a hiring manager is really asking.

Making your marketing skills checkable

  • Verify the skill the posting names. If it says performance marketing, prove analytics and channel strategy. If it says content, prove writing. Ten minutes each, and the receipt stays on your record.
  • Build one honest case study. One campaign, your exact role, the real numbers, what you would do differently. Honest beats impressive, because the interviewer will find the seam in an inflated one.
  • Get one named attestation from someone who saw the work. One credible person outweighs a page of endorsements, and on insiderOne endorsements are capped so that volume cannot replace credibility.
  • Put all of it on one link. An Insider Resume carries the verified skills, the receipts and the case study together, and Resume Studio renders a version of it for the specific role you are applying to, so the performance marketing application does not lead with the brand work.

A note on what marketers should target

The roles that pay best and last longest are the ones where a number depends on you. Performance, growth and product marketing all have that property. Brand roles are wonderful and scarce. If you are early in your career, aim at a role with a measurable output, learn to be trusted with a budget, and keep the writing sharp, because it is the one skill that transfers to every marketing job you will ever hold.

Frequently asked

What marketing roles are in demand in India?

Performance marketing and growth roles have the most openings, because they are measurable and tied directly to revenue. Content and SEO roles are steady. Brand roles are fewer and more senior. Product marketing is the fastest-growing specialist track as software companies in India build go-to-market teams. Marketing analytics sits underneath all of them and is increasingly its own role.

What skills do marketing employers in India test for?

Writing, because every channel runs on it. Numbers, because a marketer who cannot read a funnel cannot be trusted with a budget. Judgement about channels, meaning knowing what a rupee does in search versus social versus a partnership. Execution, meaning shipping campaigns on time. And communication with the people who own the product and the sales number. Most interviews test at least three of these directly.

Is a marketing portfolio enough to get hired?

It gets you the interview. It does not close it, because a portfolio shows that a campaign existed and that you were near it, not what you specifically did or whether it worked. Employers now ask for the numbers behind the piece and for your exact contribution, and the candidates who can show verified skill alongside the portfolio are the ones who stop having to argue about attribution.

How do I get a marketing job in India without experience?

Pick one channel, do real work in it for a real organisation, even a small one, and measure it honestly. Then prove the underlying skill separately, in a live verification an employer can check, so that your first role is not asked to take your word for the campaign. Apply to roles where the posting names the channel you can show, rather than to every marketing role.
