Great Place to Work Certified companies in 2026: what the badge actually means
Anyone can put the phrase on a careers page. Only a company that cleared an audited employee survey gets the badge, and only for twelve months. The difference is the whole point.
Plenty of careers pages say some version of "we're a great place to work." Almost none of them mean the certification. Great Place To Work® Certified™ is a specific, dated, third-party assessment, and knowing what it does and does not tell you is worth a few minutes before you let it weigh on a job decision.
The bar is a number, not a vibe
Certification in India rests on two things. The first is the Trust Index™ survey: an anonymous questionnaire sent to employees, measuring trust in management, connection with colleagues and loyalty to the company. The second is the Culture Audit™, in which the organisation documents its actual people practices for Great Place To Work to evaluate.
- The pass mark is explicit. In India, a company must reach at least 70% positive responses in the Trust Index survey, meet a minimum participation requirement, pass an audit of the survey responses, and submit a factual company profile.
- Eligibility starts at 10 employees in India, and an organisation with 10 to 99 employees must have been operating for more than two years.
- It expires. Certification is valid for twelve months, which means a badge is a claim about a particular year.
The two facts that change how you read a badge
The first is that the assessment is opt-in and paid. Organisations nominate themselves, and each pays a standard fee for the assessment and the analytics that come with it; Great Place To Work does it without charge for not-for-profit and social service organisations. That is a perfectly reasonable model, and it has one consequence a job seeker should hold onto: a missing badge almost always means the company never applied. It is not evidence of a bad workplace. It is no evidence at all.
The second is the expiry. Because certification lasts twelve months, a badge image on a careers page can easily outlive the certification it refers to. The badge is worth exactly as much as the date attached to it.
Certified and ranked are two different things
Certification is a pass mark. Getting onto India's Best Companies to Work For is a ranking among organisations that took part, scored 75% on the Trust Index survey and 25% on the Culture Audit. Great Place To Work states that no individual or jury has a say in who makes the list: only the employee feedback and the quality of the Culture Audit decide it. A company can be genuinely certified and never appear in the ranking, because the two answer different questions.
What the 2026 list actually contains
India's Best Companies to Work For 2026 ranks 100 organisations. Hilton is first, followed by Cisco Systems India, Synchrony International Services, IHG Hotels & Resorts, the Flipkart Group, Zensar Technologies, Aye Finance, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, HDFC Life Insurance and AU Small Finance Bank.
We read all 100 rows of the published table, and three things stand out that the headline ranking does not tell you.
- It is a list of large employers. Every one of the 100 lists more than 1,000 employees, and 51 list 10,000 or more. If you are weighing an offer from a 200-person company, its absence from this list says nothing about it, because the ranking was never measuring companies that size. Great Place To Work runs a separate list for mid-size workplaces.
- Two industries dominate. Information technology accounts for 29 of the 100 and financial services and insurance for 26, so more than half of the list comes from two sectors. Manufacturing and production is next at 11. If you are looking in hospitality, retail or healthcare, there are a handful of names each, which makes the list a short reading list rather than a map of your field.
- The listed locations cluster. Mumbai is the listed location for 36 of the 100, the Gurugram area for 19 and Bengaluru for 17. That is where the organisation is listed, not necessarily where its people work, so read it as a note about head offices rather than about where the jobs are.
Why this belongs in how you evaluate an employer
This is the same distinction insiderOne exists to make about people: a claim and an audited result are not the same kind of evidence, even when they use the same words. "We value our people" on a careers page is self-reported and costs nothing to write. A dated badge tied to an employee survey result is evidence that someone other than the company checked something.
It still is not a guarantee about your own experience. A 70% positive score means most employees who answered rated the company well at that point in time. It does not mean every team, every manager or every year will match it, and in a 50,000-person organisation the team you join matters far more than the average. Treat it as a real signal worth weighting, and then ask your own questions.
Three questions that do more than the badge
- Ask which team the survey covered and when. A certification is an average across an organisation. You are joining a team.
- Ask what changed after the last survey. A company that runs the survey properly gets a report back. Asking what it did with that report tells you whether the exercise was for employees or for the careers page.
- Ask the person who would manage you how long their last two reports stayed. It is a question no badge answers, and the reply, including any hesitation, is information.
Before you trust a badge, check the source
Great Place To Work publishes the ranked lists and certified organisations on its own site, with company profiles. That is the source of truth. A badge image proves nothing on its own, since anyone can save one, and the certification period matters as much as the certification. If a careers page claims it, the claim should be checkable in under a minute.

Frequently asked
What does "Great Place to Work Certified" actually mean?
It means the organisation ran Great Place To Work's employee survey and audit, and cleared the bar. In India that bar is at least 70% positive responses in the Trust Index™ survey, alongside a minimum participation requirement, an audit of the survey responses and a factual company profile. It is a specific, dated certification, not a phrase a company can adopt on its own.
How long does Great Place to Work certification last?
Twelve months. A badge on a careers page is a claim about a particular year, and one from a certification period that has ended says nothing about the company today. Check the date, not just the logo.
Is certification the same as being on India's Best Companies to Work For list?
No. Certification is a pass mark. The Best Companies list is a ranking of organisations that nominated themselves and were scored 75% on the Trust Index survey and 25% on the Culture Audit™, and the 2026 list holds 100 companies. A company can be genuinely certified without appearing on the ranking at all.
If a company is not certified, does that mean it is a bad place to work?
No, and this is the most common misreading. Companies nominate themselves for the assessment and pay a standard fee for it, so an absent badge usually means the company never applied, not that it failed. Treat the badge as evidence when it is there, and treat its absence as no information at all.
How can I check whether a company's claim is real?
Great Place To Work publishes the certified organisations and the ranked lists on its own site, with company profiles. A badge image proves nothing, since anyone can save an image. If a careers page claims certification, the claim should be checkable in under a minute against the source, including the certification period.
