Why Networking Is About Relationships, Not Just Contacts

When students hear the word networking, they often imagine collecting as many contacts as possible, sending connection requests, adding strangers on LinkedIn, or asking for referrals quickly. But real networking isn’t about numbers. It’s about relationships.


A long contact list doesn’t create opportunities.

Strong relationships do.


Many students treat networking like a transaction: “What can I get from this person?” This approach rarely works. People can sense when you only reach out for favors. And forced connections fade quickly.


Effective networking is built on genuine connection and value.


Instead of asking for help immediately, focus on conversations. Learn about people’s journeys. Ask questions. Share what you’re working on. Offer help when you can. When relationships are authentic, support happens naturally ,without awkward requests.


Another mistake students make is waiting until they “need” networking , usually during placements or job hunting. But networking works best when done consistently over time. Building trust takes months, not days. If you only reach out when you need something, it feels rushed and insincere.


Start early. Stay in touch regularly.


Networking can be simple:


Talk to classmates and seniors


Engage with mentors


Participate in communities


Attend events or webinars


Share your work online


Appreciate others’ achievements



Small interactions compound over time.


Strong networks also accelerate learning. Conversations expose you to new ideas, tools, and opportunities you might never find alone. Sometimes, one discussion can change your career direction completely.


Employers value referrals and recommendations because trust already exists. When someone vouches for you, doors open faster. That’s the power of relationships.


Remember, networking isn’t about impressing people. It’s about connecting with them.


Don’t aim to know more people.

Aim to know people better.Because careers grow not just through skills, but through the people who support your journey.
